Say cheese!

This is Jack, wearing my panda hat in his bed the other night. He was looking so well and full of mischief, he had me grinning like a cheshire cat.

Hope this pic makes you smile too.

Everybody say Awwwww

With all the chaos surrounding Christmas in the hospital I forgot to tell you about the birth of a special little boy.

One of my friends from school, Karen, found out her daughter was pregnant earlier this year and her baby was due on Christmas day.

Baby Lucas decided to come a bit earlier, just so that he could have his first Christmas sooner than most and he is now a month old.

They live in Glasgow which is about a 4 hour drive from my house but luckily for me, they were home to visit great granny this weekend so I was able to catch up and steal a little cuddle.

Baby Lucas

And OMG, he is mega cute! Martine, his mum, is looking good considering how tiring having a newborn is and seemed pretty relaxed and confident considering she is a young mum. I know I would never have been as confident as that at her age but it all seemed to come natural to her.

I couldn't resist teasing her mum about being called Granny though, especially since she is younger than me! Tee hee hee, it's just gotta be done.

Whilst home, I have had my hair all chopped off cos it was getting so long. Was a bit nervous about going shorter but then I thought, what the hell!  My niece, Diane, coloured it my favourite colour too...mostly purple with a bit of red thrown in.

What do you think????

Holly and I also went to see War Horse which is a superb film which I think you will love. It was a long film but I honestly wasn't aware of it as I was riveted from the start. If you haven't seen it then what are you waiting for? Oh and don't forget to bring tissues as you will cry.

Greetings from deepest,darkest Scotland

I am home at the moment for some well needed R n R.

Jack has had a better week and his pain seems to be under some sort of control. Still getting used to him sleeping with the soft collar on but I am still amazed by how much quieter his breathing is when he is using it.

Jack in Aberdeen before he became really ill

I have met some lovely people on the ward this week. Dennis is a lovely boy who has severe cerebral palsy, is blind but can speak a little. He is in the bed opposite Jack. Very apt really, two teenage boys causing mischief....Dennis the Menace and Jack the Lad. His mum Margaret is lovely as are his dad and sisters.

Dennis looks very fragile, has severe scoliosis, his limbs are permanently fixed in a bent position, is 18 but looks about 10 but despite this, he is often to be seen smiling and being cuddled by the people who love him while his favourite singer, Rod Stewart plays in the background. He has the most beautiful eyes and the longest eyelashes and his smile can brighten the darkest day.

You'd think he had been in and out of hospital a lot right? Apparently not! He has been in the hospital a week and this has been his longest stint ever. I was shocked to say the least and even more shocked when I saw the doctor go away with his clinical notes which were only about an inch thick as opposed to Jack's which look a bit like this......

and that photo was taken a year ago!

So yes, he looks more fragile than Jack but looks are very deceiving and in actual fact Jack who looks so much healthier, is actually the more fragile of the two because he has far more health problems! It just goes to prove that you should never assume anything about anyone because most likely you will be wrong.

I also met a little boy named Oscar and his mum. They were on the ward because Oscar had kicked his high chair and the side had collapsed giving him a rather nasty bump on the back of his head. He was such a little cutie. His poor mum was very stressed as this was his first major fall as he was only 7 months old and you know that the first little tumble they take is always the one that traumatises you the most.

I don't normally get to know many people when Jack is in hospital, mostly because I am so focused on him that I hardly take in my surroundings and it used to always amaze me when Granny Mac could tell me all about the other kids on the ward and what had happened to them. I would ask "so where was I when they told you that? or when did you get the chance to speak to them?" cos everywhere I went, she went!

Although I am loving being at home with my girlie, I miss Jack. The house is not the same without him and I can only go into his room for minutes at a time before I have to come back out again. Silly really but you can't help your feelings.

Holly's prelim exams start on the 1st Feb so wish her luck and rehearsals are in full swing for Joseph and his Technicolour Dream Coat so I can't wait for that in April.

Hope you are having a good January, if not, things can only get better my friends.

Thursday 12 January 2012

The light at the end of the tunnel now has been switched on, it's dim but it's there!

Hello from sunny Edinburgh.....at last!

I finally had to throw my toys outta the pram, stamp my feet and literally cry my eyes out before I finally got Jack transferred out of Aberdeen.

We arrived yesterday lunch time and my boy has already caused havoc and mayhem in the short time he has been here. He has performed beautifully and shown them these really agitated moments, the sweating events and had a few seizures within a very short time of arriving.

He also added a bit more, just for fun and I was called just after midnight by the ward to say that he had an obstructed airway episode and they had called the doctors who were seeing to him as she was speaking to me. I rushed up there, heart in my mouth but it was all over and they had fitted a collar around his neck to stop his head dropping onto his chest and causing the same thing to happen again.  This morning he vomited blood and tissue just as the doctors were doing their rounds and totally traumatised myself and his Granny Mac. He went into a fit of giggles after so he obviously felt he was being quite entertaining!!!

I wanted him to show them these events but I think he has taken it a tad too far, don't you??

The doctors here are taking things very seriously and can see just by looking at him that all is so definitely not well.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I parked the car outside the hospital in Edinburgh cos I know that they will try their very best to get to the bottom of things.

So yesterday, 11th January was a good day because he got transferred to Edinburgh but it became a remarkable day when Holly called me to tell me that she had a conditional acceptance into Queen Margaret's University in Edinburgh to study acting.  I wooped and hollered down the phone and I was a very very proud mummy.  The condition is that she is 31 points short of an unconditional acceptance but that just means she has to pass one of her exams with a C grade which hopefully she will have no trouble doing.

Holly Dolz - a star in the making?

What a fantastic day yesterday turned out to be. Hope 2012 is being good to you all so far.

The only way is up my little gigglers!
